Licenses
Depending on the kind of event you wish to hold in the hall, there may be license required. Please see the details below for which licenses are required for each type of event. We are happy to advise you if you are not sure, just let us know everything you can about your event in the booking request form.
Health & Hygiene
If you are serving or preparing food in the hall you will need a Level 1 Health & Hygiene certification. We will need to see this before your event. This certification is ready available online for a small cost (around £20) and they usually last 3 years. If you are using outside caterers we will need to see their certification.
Public Entertainment License

The Hall holds a Public Entertainment Licence (PEL) from Argyll & Bute Council. This allows for “any place where members of the public are admitted or may use any facilities for the purposes of entertainment or recreation.” This is not the same as an occasional license to sell alcohol, which must be applied for and purchased separately. A PEL is just a license required to hold any entertainment event, even if there is no charge to the public for that event.
This license is required for concerts, live music or playing of recorded music, video shows, theatrical performances, dancing or discotheques to name some but not all. Not all events need this license and types of events that do not need a PEL are noted below:
- Private functions e.g. birthday parties, weddings or anniversary parties
- Gala days
- Art exhibitions
- Coffee mornings
- Fetes
The Hall PEL is now including within the Premises License and so we no longer ask for any contribution for your events that require this license.
Single Title Screening License (STSL)
If you wish to show a single film in the hall, either with or without charging an entry fee you will require a PEL along with a Single Title Screening License or STSL. Screen Argyll advise a few months notice for getting a STSL and more information can be found on their website: or by emailing them directly at info@screenargyll.co.uk

The hall Premises License also includes a cinema license but you still require the STSL license or can apply for an annual licence through distributors should you wish to show films regularly throughout the year.
We advise you to plan well in advance to ensure you have all the correct licenses in place for showing films, the hall will need to see each license before your screening. There is lots of useful information from Screen Argyll and there may also be funding available to help with the costs.
Premises License
The Jura Hall holds a Premises License for the sale of alcohol at appropriate events for on-sales only (no off-sales). The Premises Manager is Katy Beasley.
Anyone working behind the bar must either have a Personal License or complete the statutory minimum of 2 hours training. The hall will provide this training when we have enough interest, please let Katy know if you are interested in being trained.
If you would like to run your own bar, the cost is £50 and you must have completed the training as noted above.
If you would like the hall to run a bar for you, the cost is £25 per hour you would like the bar open plus 1 hour to cover set up and close down. Hall bar prices will be kept as low as possible while adhering to alcohol pricing legislation. We are not looking to profit from the bar, only to cover costs along with providing the service.
Please note our Premises License Terms:
- Children (0-15) and young persons (16 & 17) will be permitted access, and when the bar is open, must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or over.
- Children and young persons will be permitted to remain until 9pm or till the conclusion of a pre-booked function or event.
- Children and young persons will be permitted entry to all areas except the immediate bar counter.
